Snowsports Joins Sport Aberdeen

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the recent integration of Aberdeen Snowsports Centre into Sport Aberdeen, which was officially completed at the beginning of October.

Firstly though, a brief introduction to Sport Aberdeen.

What is Sport Aberdeen?

Sport Aberdeen is an multi award-winning company and one of the most respected leisure trusts in Scotland. It is structured as a private limited company (company registration number SC350981) and also a registered charity with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (registered charity number SC040973). It was formed in 2010 by Aberdeen City Council and it delivers services across the city from a network of specialist sports venues, community-based leisure venues, as well as operating a range of physical activity and health-related programmes within community settings.

We operate from headquarters in the Bridge of Don where around 70 staff are based out of a total workforce of 500+. We also have over 400 volunteers supporting service delivery and our annual operating turnover in 2018/19 is estimated to be £13.2million.

Our company’s mission is “creating opportunities, inspiring people and changing lives through sport and physical activity.” More information can be found on the website

What has happened to Aberdeen Snowsports?

On a day-to-day basis not much has changed and it has been business as usual, however the formal position is that on 30th September 2018, Garthdee Alpine Sports Trust (known as Aberdeen Snowsports) ceased trading and the charity is in the process of officially being wound up.

Therefore, effective from 1 October 2018, all aspects of Aberdeen Snowsports business activity and staff were formally transferred to Sport Aberdeen, creating a larger, more dynamic community leisure trust in the city.

This means that all employees and volunteers, the operational responsibilities, decision making, planning and development of snowsports, will be led by Sport Aberdeen and governed through our Board of Trustee Directors. The process of integration has been ongoing during the last few months in preparation for change and everyone has been working hard to make it as smooth a transitional process as possible.

What happens next?

I have placed the centre in our Community Leisure Operations department and it will join a wide portfolio of facilities (swimming pools, sports centres, ice rink, tennis centre and others) that Sport Aberdeen already operates across the city. The department is led by David Selkirk, Director of Community Leisure Operations who can be contacted by email at

Inevitably it will take time for all of us at Sport Aberdeen to fully appreciate all aspects of the snowsports operation and it is important that my colleagues and I listen to the staff, centre users and stakeholders, such as the clubs, so we can gain the necessary insight to provide effective management. This has been uppermost in my mind.

Earlier this year we also welcomed Adventure Aberdeen into the company, following its transfer out of the City Council. This makes us well placed to be ambitious about the whole snowsports/outdoor and adventurous activity scene and we will be focused on maximising the benefits that this merger brings, in terms using the resources and expertise of both recently transferred organisations.

On a personal level, I very much enjoyed visiting the Winter Festival on Saturday 3 November 2018 and saw first-hand all the great activity that was going on and the many happy faces. I am very confident that with the greater management capacity of Sport Aberdeen and our track record of achievement, a positive future lies ahead for snowsports.

I look forward to the prospect of getting to know the snowsports community and look forward to our working together.
